European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL)

The European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL) was established to support the reform efforts of the Afghan Government in building a civilian police service. Operating within an improved rule of law framework and with respect for human rights, EUPOL Afghanistan played a vital role in the EU's long-term commitment to the country. The mission significantly contributed to the EU's overall political and strategic objectives in Afghanistan.

Through its team of police experts from EU Member States, EUPOL Afghanistan delivered support primarily through strategic-level advising to the Afghan Ministry of Interior. The mission worked collaboratively with the Afghan Government and maintained close coordination with various local and international partners. Operating with two key components—Ministry of Interior Reform and Professionalisation and Training of the Afghan National Police (ANP)—EUPOL effectively addressed critical areas of development.
