National Institutes for Water Resources

The National Institutes for Water Resources (NIWR) is a collaborative network of water institutes connecting water experts with users across the United States. Comprising 54 Water Resources Research Act (WRRA) Program Institutes based at universities and colleges, NIWR extends its reach to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.

As a volunteer-led organization, the National Institutes for Water Resources facilitates seamless coordination and interaction between its member institutes and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which oversees the administration of WRRA funding. NIWR excels at attracting and matching non-federal funds, amplifying the impact of federal investments in local water research initiatives.
