Net Zero Roads - Wessex Live Lab is at the forefront of pioneering innovative solutions for decarbonising highways maintenance. Focused on creating the UK’s first net zero emission roads, Net Zero Roads - Wessex Live Lab operates within nine ‘Net Zero Corridors’ across Somerset, Cornwall, and Hampshire. These corridors are set to transform road maintenance through cleaner, greener methods and materials.

As part of the Live Labs 2 program, a UK-wide initiative funded by the Department for Transport, Net Zero Roads - Wessex Live Lab is committed to a three-year project running until March 2026, followed by an extended monitoring and evaluation period. The diverse networks involved ensure that findings are representative of highway maintenance within each local authority road ecosystem. Through an iterative process, Net Zero Roads - Wessex Live Lab aims to progressively decarbonise maintenance across the entire asset lifecycle, underpinned by the Doughnut Economics Model to balance environmental and social needs.
