Balai Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi (BTNGM)

Balai Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi (BTNGM) is a technical implementation unit under the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE), Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia. Officially designated as a national park in 2004 through the Decree of the Minister of Forestry No. SK.134/Menhut-II/2004, this area covers approximately ±6,410 hectares spread across the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province and Central Java. Balai Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, watershed management, and as a protected area for life support systems.

This area is a habitat for various types of flora and fauna, including endemic and protected species such as the Javan Hawk-eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi), Javan Leopard (Panthera pardus melas), and various types of forest orchids. In addition to its conservation functions, BTNGM is also committed to developing education, research, and conservation-based nature tourism activities. Some of the leading natural tourism destinations in this area include the Mount Merapi Climbing Route via Selo, Kaliurang area, Turgo Hill, and the Mount Merapi Museum.
