Focused on matters of national and international significance, Assembly of First Nations operates through mandates and directives established at its bi-annual Assemblies. These gatherings, attended by elected Chiefs or proxies from member First Nations, ensure that the organization's efforts are aligned with the needs and priorities of the communities it serves.

Guided by an Executive Committee comprising an elected National Chief and Regional Chiefs from each province and territory, Assembly of First Nations ensures comprehensive representation and leadership. The Executive Committee also benefits from the support and guidance of representatives from five national councils: Knowledge Keepers, Youth, Veterans, 2SLGBTQQIA+, and Women, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives inform the organization's decisions.
