Experimental Station

The Experimental Station is dedicated to cultivating independent cultural infrastructure within the South Side of Chicago. Since 2006, The Experimental Station has been fostering a vibrant environment of pioneering educational programs, cultural initiatives, and community enterprises. The Experimental Station proactively addresses local needs through its own programs and by supporting numerous other initiatives.

The Experimental Station's key programs include Blackstone Bicycle Works, a community bike shop empowering over 200 Chicago South Side youths annually. Participants learn mechanical skills, business acumen, and community responsibility, earning bicycles and accessories through their work. The 61st Street Farmers Market, another initiative of The Experimental Station, connects the Woodlawn neighborhood with over 25 regional vendors, offering fresh, organic, and sustainably raised foods. Weekly chef demonstrations and educational programs further enrich the community's understanding of nutrition and food preparation.

Through initiatives like LINK Up Illinois, The Experimental Station enhances the affordability and accessibility of locally grown foods at farmers markets statewide. The Experimental Station continues to expand its reach and impact, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of community development in Chicago.
